Macross Anime

So What Is Macross?

I’m sure you’ve heard about it somewhere deep in the Anime world, and you’ve always wondered, what is Macross? Well, Macross is a 1982 Japanese sci-fi mecha anime, created by Studio Neu and Artland. The Macross anime franchise itself is made up of a veriety of different media, such as four different anime series, four anime movies, six OVA’s, one light novel and five manga series, which are all sponsored by Big West Advertising. In addition to all of this, there are 40 video games that are set in the Macross universe, as well as a wide selection of physical merchandise.

The anime takes place in a fictional history of Earth after 1999, having an impact of humanoid civilisation in the Milky Way. Due to the impact of what is known in the Macross anime Overtechnology, the human scientists were able to reverse engineer the technology from a crashed and broken-down alien starship. This gave the the ability of allowing them to be able to create the Mecha’s (i.e. variable fighters and destroids), a faster-than-light space fold drive for the starships that they create, and other amazing advance technologies that are present within the Macross series.

Where Did The Name Macross Come From?

So, the title of the anime, where does the name Macross come from? It comes from the name of the main spacecraft that is used with the series, the SDF-1 Macross (the abbreviation of Super Dimension Fortress Macross). The word Macross is a wordplay combination, from the prefix “macro”, it is to reference the scale of how large the human made Macross Ships are and the ever expanding distance they must cross.

But how did the name originate? Macross was not the first title that was thought up for this series, it wasn’t even on the table as a possibility. The original creators were thinking of Battle City Megarodo (or Battle City Megaload). Due to the Japanese transliteration with “L” and “R” sounds, it would give the title a double meaning which would reference to the story line; Megaload to refer to the spacecraft contain an entire city of people, and Megaroad to refer to the long journey through space.

Big West Advertising, the sponsors of the anime series, had an impact of how the series name became Macross. Due to the head of the company was a big Shakespeare fan, they wanted the main ship to be name Macbeth (マクベス, Makubesu). A compromise was made between them and the name Macross (マクロス, Makurosu) came to be; because it is similar pronunciation to Macbeth in Japanese, as well as it still contained the connotations as the original title.
